Story: The Magic Flute II : The Curse

A contemporary creation arrives at the Champs-Élysées.

The Magic Flute II : The Curse is a contemporary electro-opera composed by Damon Albarn, of Blur and Gorillaz fame. This world premiere runs from March 27th to 30th, 2025, at the Théâtre du Lido.

The project is inspired by a little-known script by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who envisioned a sequel to Mozart's The Magic Flute. The libretto for this adaptation was written by Jeremy Sams, based on Goethe’s text.

Known for his ability to blend various musical genres, Albarn explores opera by incorporating electro-pop elements. This work features iconic characters such as the Queen of the Night, Pamina, and Papageno, performed by eight opera soloists, accompanied by five musicians and a choir of twelve singers.

The stage direction is entrusted to Olivier Fredj, while the costumes are designed by Missy Albarn. The arrangements and orchestrations are by Stephen Higgins and Michael Smith, the latter also serving as musical supervisor, with Stephen Higgins as musical director.

This show promises a blend of lyrical tradition and musical modernity.

History and Fun Facts about Théâtre du Lido

With its pristine location directly on the most famous street in Paris, the Théâtre du Lido lights up the Champs-Élysées with a spectacular show of a new type of shows for this venue… Musicals!

In the 1920s, the venue was located just down the avenue from its current location and served as both a bathhouse and an entertainment venue for the working class. After World War II, it was purchased by two Italian-born brothers, Joseph and Louis Clerico, who opened the famous Lido cabaret in 1946. Inspired by Venetian luxury, the brothers chose to decorate the establishment with all the splendor of La Serenissima, and named it after one of its most famous beaches. Having quickly built a reputation as the Parisian nightlife Mecca, where one went both to see and to be seen, the Lido attracted talent from around the world, such as the famous Irish dancer Margaret Kelly and her troupe, the Bluebell Girls. With their extravagant costumes, the professional dancers quickly became an attraction in and of themselves.

With a new wave of direction, the Lido cabaret with its glittery, glamorous Bluebell Girls ceased to exist in September 2022 and officially changed its name to Théâtre du Lido is as well as announced their new focus on musicals. Since December 2022, Théâtre du Lido Paris started their journey in producing high quality, internationally famous musicals in their original language with some of the greatest Broadway theatre performers and actors hailing from all corners of the world!
If you're looking for the perfect place to see a Broadway musical, no need to go to New York... Théâtre du Lido has got everything and more!
